Default Melling M155 Oil Pump

Just wondering how many of you are running this particular oil pump. I think this is the oil pump that people claim the casting is weak. I have heard that this oil pump is not to be used on a high performance application. I need to replace my oil pickup because it fell off and I have the m155 with the new casting. Should I spend the money and purchase the melling select 10554 oil pump? It is $100 compared to $40 and they both do the same job. How many of you have seen the evidence of the m155 cracking? Has anyone experienced this?

I was under the impression the problem was with the GM pumps. Which melling might make them for GM idk. But ive got a regular M55 going in mine

I used the melling 10551 pump when I did my heads and cam. That was 4 years ago and I run it hard daily.I would go with the 10554 or the 10551.

No, it's not just the GM pumps. The select series have the better casting.

The select series does have the better case but the gears are not forged like the old ones. I believe they are Powdered Metal if I recall after speaking to a melling engineer. Sounds substandard to me. Im ditching my M55HV. Not gonna take any chances.

I went with the melling select series pump in mine for a couple reasons...

Its a pain to get to if you need to replace it and if does break the $50 you saved on the pump wont cover the bill for the new bearings and gaskets and all that you will tear up..An oil pump is something you don't want to cheap out on!

Good luck

Matt

Melling Select 10552 here. Don't skimp on something as important as the oil pump, IMO.

How many of the regular m155's have cracked due to installation in a performance application? What makes them crack? Word is that if you use solid motor mounts that it will cause the casting to crack due to excessive vibration. I can't see how anything else would cause it.

My engine builder just put the M155 pump in my new engine with the white pressure relief spring. I asked him about using the select series pump because I had heard of the M155's cracking in the neck area. He told me that Melling had fixed the problem, I guess I'll find out for sure once the engine is in the car.

Yeah no thanks. My builder put the M55HV in mine and I did enough reading that Im changing it out. I am going to a Titan pump as I can get a good deal on one. Im also having jeff johnston of billet fabrications make me a one off custom pan to go with it. Its not cheap but I will have a bad *** oil pump and pan!
