Entering Diagnostic Mode(93Z) I've read all about using the paperclip to span the two terminals on the OBDI port on 93 Z28s. I gave it a shot today and couldn't get the check engine light to flash anything. I could hear the fans kick on, but I never got any indication of the service engine light. Just how long do I have to wait before I would see something, even if there were no codes it should still flash something to tell me it was in diagnostic mode correct? Would a Hypertech piggyback chip have anything to do with it?
With the way the wiring was hacked up in this car it wouldn't surprise me if the ground wasn't connected or the wire to the ECM was cut somewhere. The fans do come on with the paperclip in place, as soon as I remove it they stop so I thought I would be connecting?

I've read on several forums and from several software/hardware companies that it is a way to determine if you have a code stored on the ECM. It will only give a number to look up, not near as detailed as a code reader will give you but I just figured I'd try it out. I don't currently have the SES light illuminated but I just thought I would see if I could at least enter the diagnostic mode.
Thats weird that neither one of your cars would do it. Mine does it every time i have a SES light on. The only thing an actual reader would give you is a number. Which would actually be the same number that should flash on the instrument panel. The number 12 IIRC is the number meaning it is in diagnostic mode. Are you sure your bulb isnt out? lol

It should work on a 1993 with the factory ECM. Does your check engine light even work?

I'll look into the light working, it comes on when you initially start the car doesn't it? I wanna say I've seen it light up.
I can always just run new wires from the ECM if I had to, I'm not sure the ones coming from the ECM are making it all this way to the OBD plug, the previous owner was a moron with wiring so they very well could be cut somewhere.
