Default Please help me get these rockers set!!!

hey guys i have a stock 96 Lt-1 I just put back together and im having major rocker arm noise. ive used the shbox's #1TDC then #6TDC method and i still have major rocker arm clatter. Oil pressure is 60+psi and all lifters are new.and the new lifters have had plenty of run time to fully pump up.

now here is one thing i thought of.i used a 1/4" ratchet to set 3/4 turns past 0 lash. is there a posibility that a 1/4" ratchets turn is not equivalent to a 3/8 ratchets as in i might have the right preload? i guess you all understand what im saying....really dont wanna set while running...too messy.let me know if you all think my theory is relevant.

the turns are the same no matter what ratchet you use...its the nut that is turning regardless so the ratchet doesnt matter...

3/4 turns is 270 degrees regardless if you used a 1/4 in ratchet or a 3/4 in breaker bar so your problem is not the ratchet I have never had good luck with #1 and #6 TDC method, I take it one cylinder at a time and make sure you are on base circle of the cam

I did the #1 and #6 TDC method but then I had to adjust while running its not much of a mess just put a sheild up to stop the oil from coming out onto the exhaust something like cardboard. Cut to fit thats all.

so do you all think the tdc method is a waste of time? or is 3/4 turn not enough?

remember, its a 4 stroke engine. Im guessing your not on the base of the cam. Your probably on the wrong stroke. You want to be on the compression stroke at TDC. (So if the piston were to go down the spark plug would be firing)

well something happened, I put 1/4 turn past zero lash so 3/4 is plenty of preload. So if you are positive you were on base circle of the cam when you adjusted and you put more than enough preload on them the only other thing I can really think of that could have happened is your rocker studs have left handed threads

If you are using stock rockers then do a 3/4 turn past zero lash. Best method/most accurate w/ engine off is EOIC which is also listed on shoebox's page.
Here's a vid I made describing how to do EOIC. It's solid roller, but most of it applies.

There are several methods listed on my site. If one does not seem to work for you, try another. I've never had an issue with the 1 and 6 method.

Sometimes it could look like you are on the right stroke, but then you aren't. This happened to me about 5 months ago. I double checked and went oops this is wrong.
I always do the #1 and #6 TDC method, it goes pretty quick that way.

I found out after three times of adjusting my 1.6 rr's that the stud nut is not re usable because it has a cone shape design for the threads so i bought new ones for $30 bucks and solved my problem, just an idea.

Stock nuts are reusable if they still hold. If they feel loose, replace them.
