Default A noise, then zero oil pressure

Alright so my friend was driving into work this morning. She says there was a strange noise and then the check gauges light came on, oil pressure was reading zero. She said it didn't sound like the last two motors that died on her, the other two motors were knocking.

So I'm already thinking worse case scenario, she told me yes it was still running when it was reading zero psi. What could instantly fail to cause this? Should I pull the fuse for ignition and fuel and try cranking it, see if I have pressure?

I'll try to get more details and such sorted out later in the day when I talk to her again. She says her husband put both oil and transmission fluid in yesterday.

What kind of car is it? If it's a LT1 the oil pump drive can break making a noise then no oil presure. The fact that it was still running is a good thing as long as she shut it off rite away.

Pickup could've fallen off..or the Oil Gear on the Cam could've stripped out or something..

Definately a wierd issue..

Yea something would be a little odd if they were all built by the same person.

I will say the title kinda scared me for a sec..lol

Nah Merv, your motor holds up to my daily abuse well!

None of them were built really. This motor is in her 94 Z28. Their 94 Formula had the stock engine go(166k?), then a H/C stock shortblock LT1(around 66k) go on them. Both of the Formula motors had knock.

This motor is a stock shortblock/heads with a CC503 and 1.6 scoripions. Around 127k on this one I think.

Maybe its time to either buy a brand new engine, or get something else..

Yea I'd look into taking her car down for a little bit and assembling a good Engine for it.

So if there is NO oil on the dipstick and yesterday the husband put oil in the engine. Where did all the oil go? There must be a major leak somewhere! IF there is no oil, then that would be all the fancy noises going on in the engine.

Well yes it did leak pretty bad. They were putting a quart a week into it. She said the low oil light hasn't been on in a while, well I'm guessing it should have been on.
Guess I get to pull my 3rd LT1 of this year.

Funny enough, when we pulled the plug, there was oil coming out of it. Go figure. I'm done with cars, it's time for me to move onto a bike lol and the wife can drive the LT1 with headers and a/c delete pulley. Looks Like I'm going to put a formula shell up pretty soon

the metal chunks could be the "dummy" distributor drive aka oil pump drive. mine stripped itself and i had chunks in the pan. worth a look.....

Time will tell, for the time being we are getting her back on the road as quickly as we can. I'm sure she will appreciate a motor she won't have to put oil in all the time, and no exhaust leaks. The current mids on the car, well the ypipe doesn't bolt up to the cat very nicely.
