Default So I've picked a stall...now how do I use it?

I have picked out a Yank ss3600 for my full bolt on '95 formula. I plan on buying it and having it installed for summer '10 racing season...I've read to death and talked to lots of people and have no doubts this is the stall I want...

however, I have never driven a stalled car and have a few questions:

Whats the best method to launch it at the track?-do I basically just "power brake" it up into the RPM range before I launch?

Also, how would I do a burnout? (gotta know these little things)

thanks in advice fellas!

you will do your burnout just a before but make sure you come out of the burnout box in second gear. when you stage at the line you will have to work on your timing for your launch a bit, but the best way to come out the hole is to flash the converter. you will sit at idle as the tree starts its drop, and then you will just floor it and let the converter hit its limit on its own. this duplicated the effects of manual transmission dumping the clutch. you will come out the hole much harder that way than if you foot brake it up to the stall limit. other people may have other methods, but ive seen the results of both methods at the track, and flashing the converter will pick you up several tenths over stalling it up.

Do it just like firehawk & merv are saying and try mashing it on 3rd yellow.

yep...this also preloads the drivetrain which in turn is easier on parts

Also by not loading the car up on the converter you also are leaving the suspension geometry correct.

But try both ways and see what way works best for your car.

got it, so don't preload it-I've heard so many different ways of the "correct" way to do it...you guys know how it is...

Why should I leave the burnout box in 2nd gear?

so basically, here's a run down from what I've gathered:

1. Doing a burnout in the box is the same
2. Pull up to the staging lane
3. Left foot on the break, right one waiting to punch the gas
4. When the light turns green, have it punched to the floor

is there any other pointers or anything Im missing?

As Ray said you want some preload on the drivetrain just to stop breakage. You also want to try it basically both ways and see what works.

I would try from a "raised idle" maybe 1200rpms or so just to put some load on and then try it more aggressively.

I'd just hold the Brake and launch it off the Idle.

Depends on the combo and track prep really.

I got my best times foot braking it until right before wheelspin and then rolling into the gas. Flooring it off idle would have been the death of my 10bolt.

In an ideal situation with great track prep, a strong enough rear, a loose stall, and sticky tires, just flooring it from idle would be the best bet but it also is more rough on the drivetrain.

Short answer: Like suggested, try both and see which one you and your car like better

For reference my idle is about 900-925 hot in gear, so a 1200rpm launch is on the throttle a little.

Its hard to say what your car will like the best. For example, my car liked to foot braked to 2800 over just flashing the converter. I was cutting mid 1.6's everytime and it seemed to get faster with more rpm. I had a Circle D though, might be different from the Yanks.

damn...makes me want to buy it right now...

As for track prep, my local track does a damn good job with that. Every friday night before test and tune they do it up right...I can launch with it to the floor with bald street tires and hook up fine there...

thank you one and all! I did a search on this and didn't really find the answeres I was looking for, so you've all been a tremendous help.

The way your car is now? My car has a 3600 converter, 3.73's, CAI and DR's.

you come out burnout box in second for a couple reasons, one is because first gear doesnt get the tires spinning enough to heat up your slicks good enough, and two coming out in secon when the tires do start to bite, its less driveline shock than a hard bite in first
