I use to have my magnaflow catback with a muffler delete (straight piped) with ps long tubes, ory, and a 12 inch resonator to reduce cackling. That sounded good but was to LOUD for my tastes! I have since reinstalled the magnaflow muffler.
Heres a coupe vids. Pretty windy but gives you an idea of what it sounded like:

You'll get everything from it sounds bad-*** to it sound like garbage as far as opinions, its a personal preferance thing. I used to run headers - y-pipe - dump on my third gen and it sounded good to my ears, but real loud. Going behind the rear axle will definitely help get the noise behind the cockpit some, but its gonna drone on the highway, and cackle quite a bit, and be generally loud as hell. Some, myself included, love this. Better bet, you've already got a good muffler/exhaust setup, just add a cutout, best of both worlds.

I second the cut out. I have a rearmount and often run it open and it is LOUD and a turbo quiets the sound a LOT.

It is preference but if you go further than 15 miles it is annoying to almost everyone

I used to run open headers and open y and loved it. Now that I'm a bit older I think it sounds like ****. I actually added a resonator in line with my borla to quiet and smoothen the sound.

I currently have shorties, cutout, and no muffler...sounds okay, but pretty redneck at the same time, sounds like a truck, and it rattles everything
