Default compstar vs scat

Which do you prefer? on your build, did either of these require excess balancing?

I can get either fully forged 4340 383 kit:

Callies compstar $2030
or
Scat $1850

Vote and offer your opinions please.

i would say it depends on your end result. if your going to put stupid power to it then go with callies. if your building a mid power street machine might as well save a little bit of cash and go with scat. but since its only a $200 difference you might as well get callies

We use and sell both the compstar and scat. The compstar has a nicer finish and more attention to details on the rods. The compstar comes with arp2000 bolts in the rods standard or you can upgrade the scat to that bolt for around $100. The other biggest differance is that the Scat crank is internal front external rear, and the compstar is internal on both ends. Both setups are very strong.

I'd get "made in USA" callies, not compstar. Though I'm sure it's a good piece. I'd get it before getting scat.

Callies or Lunati. IMHO.

Compstar is forged overseas and machined here in USA. Thats the difference.

Both eagle and scat are overseas castings. ALL cranks should be inspected by a machinist and balanced before being used....there is no such thing are a "pre balanced" crank since every complete rotating assembly is different.

FWIW Eagle is rated to more HP then Scat. Both are good to well over 1,000 hp though and will be fine in 99% of LT1 builds when properly installed. Either or is a preference.

Both cast cranks are garbage, and should be avoided like the plague. IIRC Eagle SBC cast is only 500fwhp, Scat 450. That is right around where most properly made H/C stroker builds end up.

I voted Compstar.

Scat and Eagle should be used as paper weights. They are pretty much the only 2 companies I have really heard with failing parts. I know people build motors on a budget and they tend to be the cheaper route but sometimes you ll pay later on.

Now there are plenty of people who have good luck with their stuff but I would spend a few more bucks and sleep a little better a night.

just my 02 tho...

For cast cranks I would agree with you, but a blanket statement about the whole brand is not really fair. LT1s are blessed with very strong factory cranks. This makes aftermarket cast cranks a downgrade in most cases. I would not use a cast crank from any manufacturer in anything more then a mild rebuild daily driver.

Forged scat or eagle cranks on the other hand are more then strong enough for any LT build on this site except for maybe a small handful of people...and those are the same ones who end up with core shift and block problems from the amount of power they are making.

I made this same decision a few months ago. I went with Callies crank and Compstar rods. I've never used Scat stuff and was seriously considering them but after seeing the product from Callies I'm conifident I made a good decision. I voted Compstar.

I got my setup from Corey. I havent finished the car yet. But Im Confident he does good work. I went compstar for my build. I figured if I was that deep in it then why not spend the couple hundred.

As stated, nothing wrong with the Scat forged products. Perfect for 99.9% of the builds you see here.
