My windshield and hatch glass have my vin# etched in them. I never noticed this on my other cars, so I was wondering who else has it???

Insurance companies use to (may still) give a premium discount for having the glass etched with the VIN.
This was supposed to deter theft. Many decades ago, a guy tried to sell me a pair to T/A "T" Tops that had etched VIN numbers in them. Guess what happened to him!?

I didn't know that they actually did it at the dealership. I just know you had to pay extra for it. When i bought my car they asked me if i wanted one that had it done. It was like 400$ so i said no. It wasn't aware that they did it there though. I think i could sand blast it on there myself for next to nothing.
my old 90 had it, but the 93 doesn't.....I do know it was a dealer option though.....truthfully, I don't think it would stop someone if they want your car though. Glass is easy enough to have replaced, the hard part is the one riveted in the dash

I have worked at 3 different dealerships in the last 10 years, 2 Acura 1 BMW. Every new car that has a PDI(pre-delivery inspection) done has VIN etch, and wheel locks installed. Its meant to be a theft deterent, but is actually a way to get more money out the customer. It costs $300-$400 on all cars and is done before they pick it up so they cannot turn it down, sometimes its built into the price. My 01 SS with 14k on it had it done when I bought it at 11k. I was pissed to find out its was done. Its not a factory option, its all on the dealership.

thats not hard
