Default Misfire issues. .

So this all started after I changed the timing cover gasket to stop a pesky oil leak. Got everything back together and went for a test drive and it ran perfect that night. The next day however I noticed it started to misfire pretty badly. Got it scanned and it was a random cylinder misfire code.

It feels like it's only running on half the cylinders sometimes, SES light will flash. The strange thing is, sometimes it clears up and runs just fine! I have checked all the connections again and plug wires. Thinking it might be the opti but wondering if anybody had any suggestions.

Well as much as it seems like it might be the opti, i would check your fuel pressure before i bought anything. My 96 was doing the very same thing and the pump was at fault. I bought all new ignition components thinking it would solve the problem.. I just wasted a lot of money. Do a search for "fuel pump?" if you want to read the whole thread. There is damn good advice in there on how to easily change the pump if it turns out to be your issue, as well as where to get the walbro 255 for $100..

Well my car does have a walbro 255 in it with less than 10k miles on it. This all happened only a couple days after everything was installed back from the timing cover gasket change, so it makes me think it has something to do with that.

Well did you get a lot of coolant on the opti when you pulled the water pump? Did you pull the opti apart to inspect its condition? I have heard that the relay switch to the fuel pump can cause them to burn up rather quickly if it is faulty. I don't know if i am helping at all but i have been down the "Random Misfire" road a few times already, and it can b a pain in the ***.

Yeah it is a pain in the *** for sure. I tried to get as little coolant on the opti as I could when I pulled the pump. I didn't really inspect the optispark because it was running just fine when I took it off. Maybe some moisture got in there when I had it off
