You can get a handful of HP from an electric pump. When wired properly they are very reliable as a DD.

It should cost any more than a quality replacement pump, when you wire it up use a abs relay(better built) instead of the junk the parts stores have on the selves.

I used the CSR ewp and wired it to a blank spot for a fuse in the under hood fuse block. Then used the factory location of the abs relay. Then ran its main power and ground to the power block and main ground stud on the passenger side. Feed it through the factory loom so its hidden. It is working perfectly. If you have a good understanding of wiring then the meizer ewp wiring diagram will go e you all the I.do you need to wire it up.

Make sure to solder all the wires since that is one of the last thing you would want to go out.

It isn't hard. Pull out the old pump, knock the guts out of it, replace guts with electric pump, reinstall. Done.

I traded my old wp in for a rebuilt one from autozone for $80. I'd recommend that if you're on a budget.

We don't need no stinking freeze plugs.

but really make sure you have it installed all the way in so you don't dump any coolant out of the weep hole.

Meizere EWP is about $200. Wire it to a fused relay or buy one

I know this thread is four years old but I have a question about water pumps. Mine is leaking out the weep hole. If I wanted to switch to an electric water pump do I need a functioning mechanical water pump to use as a housing? From what I'm reading here it sounds like that is the case.

Also, if I stay mechanical AC Delco has two different part numbers, 251-556 and 252-701. The first is listed as original equipment, the second as professional grade. Anyone know what the difference is?

You just need a good housing, it can have bad seals you remove all that.

My GUESS on the part numbers would be one has a longer warranty but as covered you can use a leaky pump to put an electric in to DOWNGRADE your cooling.

IMO that is something too often misunderstood, the electrics are sufficient but are free up power by doing less work and reducing cooling capacity. They flow more at idle when the engine isn't making any heat but by cruise rpm the stocker is moving more water depending on rearend gearing and exactly which electric pump you choose.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll probably stay mechanical. I saw that Autozone has a new non reman unit for $100. Ordinarily I'd be skeptical of that but a friend of mine says he has been running one for two years without issue. Anyone tried one of these?

Also someone mentioned a weep hole mod, does anyone know what that is?

Don't mess with the weep hole. It's there to prevent coolant from reaching the bearings. It is also good at warning you that your water pump is about to completely quit.

My brother recently chucked his cooling fan on his 7 Series because he didn't replace his water pump when I told him too and it cooked his bearings , they seized and threw his clutch fan into his shroud and radiator them a million pieces.

I saw the Delco unit on Rock Auto but I believe that is a reman, while AZ has a new one for the same price. All things being equal I'd rather not go reman unless the quality is still better.

Actually what the weep hole mod refers to is threading a nipple into the weep hole and attaching some tubing to keep any coolant that leaks out from getting on the opti. I may do that too.
