Default help please! oil gauge keeps getting lower!

it just started happening recently. i have a 94 z28 and i just started having problems with the oil gauge. when i first started up everything goes fine. gauge goes up to half and stays there for a while.

as i drive more...it starts to get lower and lower only as i come to a stop. then after a few minutes of driving and stoping...it gets even lower and hits the very first line. then my "check gauges" light comes on. as i get on it again, it goes up and when i break again, it gets all the way down. and again says "check gauges"

i checked my oil before i start it up and after i turn off the car. when i check the dip stick the oil's where its suppose to be. ~1800 miles left for my next oil change. i used castrol full syntetic and change every 3000 miles.

again, if anybody can help me i would help me i would greatly apprecieate it.

thanks in advance.

Just an FYI, that's your oil pressure gauge, not your oil level gauge (sounds like you have a misunderstanding). What you should do is pick up a mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify that the sending unit is not the problem (unlikely in this scenario, but a wise step to take). If your oil pressure is that low once the oil is warmed up, then your motor is likely in the first stages of failing. You can band-aid the problem (only temporarily) by running a thicker weight oil.

but thanks for your advice. i appreciate it. i use 10w-30 btw.

You can order an oil pressure gauge with tubing and the proper fitting from any speed shop, like Summit or Jegs. There is an auxiliary fitting on the side of the block that you can use just above the oil filter. You'll see a small plug in the block, and the thread size is 1/4" NPT.

Something like this would work. It's a cheap one - all you'd really need.

Most parts stores have oil pressure gauges for about 20 bones. Stock gauges are horribly inaccurate, a mechanical gauge will tell you exactly what your pressure is.

The stock OP gauge is electric and is located on the back of the intake manifold. The new mechanical gauge will be installed in the auxiliary port on the side of the block. Your stock one will still work.

The mechanical one just verifies what actual pressure is. Sometimes the electrical gauges arent accurate. Dont drive around permenantly with the mechanical one hooked up. lol Its just temporary for diagnosis.

example: If the mechanical gauge reads 40psi and the electric one is reading 25psi. Then you know the electric one is bad and the sensor needs to be replaced. If they both read the same psi then you know the oil pressure is really that low or whatever....

I would suggest that if there is a concern and he has purchased the mechanical gage that he also purchase a gage pod and mount it in the cabin of the car, permenantly. Nothing wrong with doing that, plus he will be able to keep a better eye on it in the future

That is very poor statement. You do NOT want mechanical guages in the cabin with you. Especially fuel or oil.

If you're going to have an OP gauge in the car, use one with an electric sending unit.
