i would start by buying another complete lt1 engine and tearing it apart, completely rebuilding it with stock ported heads and cam and bumping the compression up to about 11:1..
have it sitting on the engine stand ready to drop in.

Check out my mods...its been my DD for more than five years...I even drive it on long road trips with NO PROBLEM>>>
Best of all the sucker will pull past 7K rpm in Drive with NO DRAMA
Most of the credit has to go to AI, Brian Ebert and Ed Wright....
Been using a Mez HD and 58 mm BBK for more than five years too....once again no drama.....
