Unless you're going to road race it I would just look for a used torsen out of an LS1. If you aren't doing the differential swap yourself there's a good chance you will be out $800 easily by the time you pay for the diff + labor.

I'd say 4.10s will be your best bet. Very common choice with the 6-speed guys.

You already have 3.42s. 4.10s are what you want.

Search the classified sections. 4.10's are also a lot weaker than 3.42 and 3.73's in 10 bolts. I completely destroyed the guts in my eaton diff and twisted a stock axle somehow, but my 3.73's are still going strong. Your best bet would probably be finding a 10 bolt in good working order that someone took out and just swap them out.

the 4.10's are weaker, the teeth are cut deeper in 4.10's than they are in 3.42/3.73's but 4.10's are a better gear for the tall gearing in the m6's later gears also..

eaton makes the LS type units also but i think a complete salvage yard LS rearend, (or from an individual sale) with the larger brakes would be a better bargain... then swap in the 3.73/4.10 gears..
jegs and summit have good prices on gears, and dont be afraid of thier own brand either...

the thing is, i think i would have to look at a bolt in 9inch housing, theres some on ebay that are complete, and some without a third member, and the prices dont seem to awfully bad on them for what your getting..

link to 9inch housing uses your stock brakes, moser axles included.. no third member though...

You could find a used rear if you just need something now to drive on while you save. But, I do agree that if your not making tons of power then you might not need the "best" rear...
