nobody ever listens to me...if they did, he would be very happy with a complete ls1 motor and no opti!!

the opti replacements have all been returns though, so no $$ out of pocket

No problem. I would rather try and help than rag on him as that really gets you nowhere and is a waste of time for everybody involved. Next spring it will be 25 years that I have been doing this for a living so I know what its like to have a car fight you over some small little thing. It will end up being some stupid little BS that will make you say oh hell I should have thought of that a long time ago. Tell your buddy to hang in there he will get it he just has to keep checking things untill he finds it.
Take care
Rob

id stop throwing optis at it like that theres obveously an issue besides the optis theres no way you got 6 bad optis and they all died that fast.......i've got a stock opti wit an msd cap and rotor on mine and ive been twisting the thing 8100rpm for two years wit no issues....ive built a few lt1's and only ran into one bad opti and it was an autozone special lol........first off check that dowel pin.... i can almost guarantee this is the issue also check the retainer plate holding the cam in and make sure the cam isn't walking in the block.......if that dowel pin is too long it WILL cause the issue you are experiencing......also like said above make sure the bolts you used are not contacting the base of the opti and pushing on it.......im willing to bet its one of those two things....probably the dowel pin........what year is the car? if its a non vented opti (93-94) the dowel pin is even shorter than the 95+ vented units......this is a common mistake that is made with the lt1's

he said the retainer plate is in correctly, said the bolts arent contacting base of opti either. The car is a 95 with a vented opti. He is about to pull the opti off again and measure the dowel pin again, i will post back with the length. thanks again for the help everyone

Might be a dumb question but did he swap out the cam bearings? Sometimes the cam "wobbles" and causes the opti to get wiped out

actually, that could be the problem. When he removed the stock cam it had the dowel pin sheered off of it....

They are off the Dynaspark web page.. All of those measurements must be met for an opti to operate and seat correctly....

The Dynaspark is a Billet piece but uses the same dimensions and measurements as a GM or Delphi opti so the measurements listed also work for other optis too...

if all of them check out ok then its time to look elsewhere....

Here are a few more tips...

are you useing the same vacuum harness on all the optis you install?

Change the vacuum harness and the PCV valve before the next one and that may help...because If you have a bunch of oil in those lines and re-use them every time then it would not be a surprise that you are killing optis...

Also makes sure you Fuel pressure regulator is not leaking into the intake as this can also pre mature kill optis too...
