Ummmm - no they don't. As stated the milage is tied to the VIN or the chasis not the drivetrain. If it was then everytime someone got a motor replaced under warranty or at a shop you would see them rolling the miles back. Just not the case.

if you do move the odo silver or white lines will appear between the numbers and you'll be in trouble at inspection time

The problem with that is, not everyone keeps their car's forever like they might intend in the beginning. So, he gets a brand new driveline, and his current ODO might be at 146k (just a made up number bc I don't know the OP actual mileage), but then he gets a new cluster with 5k on nit. Then he drives it for a few years and might only put 20k on it. Then he decides to sell, and he lists it as a super low mileage car with a built driveline. But in reality it is just an old car with high miles like everyone elses.

Not saying the OP would do that...but some people would. And i know i wouldnt want to buy a car i thought had 25k miles to find out it has almost 200k or something..

There are alot of laws covering automobiles, Most states record mileage of the car at the time of sale, inspection points and or routine maintenance at your garage. If your car magically has less miles than a previous record would indicate, whether its for sale or not you could be charged.

I've seen many restos with the milage @ 0. Im not talking about just droping in a new engine, and rolling it back.

Changing a speedometer only requires you to visit a shop that deals with them.. However I believe they only match odometers for swaps. You get a certificate to note the correct mileage at inspections.

I know you decided to keep it at the mileage but just keep in mind for if you do swap the dash or something you can get the mileage set to the correct without failing inspections and strikes on the vehicle title.

Went through that mess with a bike I have... replacing the 85mph speedo to a more modern one... it came with 0 miles and I found out what I had to do to make it legit.

mileage is not stored in the PCM...I have an LS1 PCM in my 97 now, mileage is still the same.

I know how to do it.

Only Analog this will work for..not digital.

And no I haven't done it with the intent to defraud..lol..Clusters that had broken internals and had to be rebuilt.

I think any time an odometer has been changed, it is the responsibility of that person to fill out an odometer disclosure form to be "legal".

I'd be interested in (think somebody already said it) mileage matching with an odo swap. My red 94 A4 project has a 115 MPH speedo. It just annoys me. I've fixed old watches and 2 barrel 8-day clocks, so I'd like to give it a go with a broken unit like The_Merv said. And NC law would require an odo disclosure statement to be attached to the title.

only a 20 year old douche would want to do something like this in the first place.

I doubt it's fraud for a 93 Z28 but you might have to check state laws. Usually cars over 5-10 years old aren't subject to have accurate odometer requirements.
