You may not have to. The gauge I bought had just enough to snake out out of the hood and kind of stood up once the hood was closed. You don't have to go fast. Probably best if you got yourself in stop/go situations. Test this both with a full tank and nearly empty (maybe 1/4 full).

i think you should let the car sit for a while and heat up before i just go drive around wasting gas. sounds to me like the longer you wait the better. you might even catch the pressure drop(if that is the problem) without even driving it.
If you do drive the car under load with the gauge fished out the hood, i like to use the wiper arm to hold the hose and i place the gauge sideways facing the driver seat. this will give you a clear view of 40-60 psi range. and if the needle falls down you know your loosing pressure
