Re-ringing from underneath the car, is it possible???in our Lt1z?
Ok first off I just want to say that many will say this job is worth chit, and maybe so but I say " I got no dough, hoe"....... but still have a need for speed. I have to replace the clutch soon and I have to redo the rear main seal on the engine(small leak). Along with replacing the bearings inside the T56. About 5k miles ago I redid the topend. So in order for any of those jobs to not be a waste I would like to re-ring cuz I'm down there when I have to do the rear main seal. Although I think that seals pops out without dropping the pan no??? eh??? that's a good question????
Well anyhoot here's the hypothetical plot. I wanna get an hone brush you know the one with stone drops at the tips of the bristles. Then I wanna hone from underneath just enough to deglaze and leave the desired grit finish. Then I was thinking about file fitting the rings to help increase the chances of a better seal. Then I want to maybe 10/10 the crank and go with MORE performance coated bearings or maybe just keep the crank stock and have it re-polished. New oil pump using stock replacement!!! the old one lasted this long!!! And reuse the pistons and rods. I would be happy from getting 40,000 extra miles from this but with like new performance.
This would buy me just enough time to save up for a real rebuild. I got no engine hoist!! or engine stand right now, there is an ******* in my family that purposely got rid of those and the air compressor. So those items will have to be bought new with the rebuild later.
While I am down there with the transmission out I plan on rebuilding it using a new mainshaft from G-force. The current transmission will not put up with any abuse, that much I sorta sense from it right now, if I could pull this stunt off all I would have left to address is the rearend.
What do you guys think??? Stupidity at it's greatest or it's possible?
The focal point of this project is that I make use of everything I knock down or out of the car, the tranny, the clutch, the rear main, and also the fact that I don't totally waste the topend rebuild I just did a little while ago. To rebuild this chit now after that JUST plain sucks, not to mention the ******* in my family that left me without tools. Forcing me to make due with what I have. This job let's me get around all those things plus keep my GF off of me about spending more money on my car.

You should remove the engine from the car and do this on a stand. Removing the rotating assembly out of the bottom of the engine, while its still in the car is not advisable under any circumstances.
Doing it cheap and doing it right aren't always the same thing.

Hey thanks for the input, gonna follow through on it too. I can't imagine running the honing brush from underneath there, no matter how many times I do it over in my head. Well I'm at 140k now I'm hoping i can do this before 160k. Gonna pick up a spare clunker first.
I wish I could afford to do it all over the right way with an overbore but for that job I would like to upgrade everything with Forged crank and pistons so I'm really doing this to put that bigger job off cuz I'll need more money for that.
Thanks again, chrome-moly rings or cast iron?? file fitting would be of some value no?? that is assuming nothing is out of round, nothing will seal if the bore's out of round.
