Default oil pressure sending unit, WTF?!

Alright so I had that thread about the oil pressure issue, or possible lack thereof. the_Merv got back to me, pickup was tack welded 1/4"-3/8" above the pan, pan isn't dented, factory windage tray is installed.

So I decide I will replace the sending unit. I realize today that up top is going to suck replacing, so I return it and get the one threaded for the bottom, you know right above the oil filter?

Yeah so what do people use to install it????!!!! I tried a 1" socket, but the way the engine is cast you can't thread it straight with the socket on it? What are people doing, cutting up their 1" wrenches or something? I need advice on how to get this thing in, I can only get it to go one or two threads by hand.

I want to get this done so I can see if its just the 16 year old sending unit that is bad........

You need an OPSU socket.

Hmm judging by that picture, I can use a wrench on the end?

That still doesn't deal with the space issue though, it just does not seem like there is enough space between the sensor body and the block for the socket to fit? I was turning the 1" socket with a set of vice grips, but then that stopped and I realized I probably was crossthreaded. I love how I can get the plug in and out that was in there though with no problems.

I dunno, I would have just installed it back up top.

Hmm up top was even worse! the_merv built his own steam tube using fittings and fuel line, instead of that flimsy metal and banjo bolts. well that really reduces the room and if I cut that line in the mess of things, well then I'm really going to be in trouble! There is never space anywhere. Yeah after six or seven years I still bitch at the space issue.

I would left it up top, its easy as hell to R/R but to each is own. As for the tool, yea thats it, they also make shorter ones with 1/4 socket completely hollowed out so you can see what your doing.

For those who say up top is easy to replace, well trust me you aren't looking at mine. I'd pretty much have to do what ebeard said if I wanted to replace what may or may not be faulty at this time. So trying to get one installed down low.

And then if the oil pressure still drops under WOT still, then I guess I'll really cringe.

I have a tall intake manifold with a STB so its nearly impossible to get you hands back there to even take the oil pressure sensor harness off. I usually just climb up on the drivers side shock tower and reach in from the brake booster side to get at it. It's not the easiest thing to do but it can be done.

How would changing a sending unit fix an oil starvation issue?

Not sure if it is a starvation issue. Maybe the sending unit is bad? I'd rather eliminate this possibility before getting too crazy here.

Are you sure you're threading it into the right hole lol? There are two above the oil filter, you thread into the one closest to the filter. There was plenty of room for me. I just used a small vice grips and got it as tight as I could. You don't really need to torque it down that hard. Mine came with threadlocker already on it.

Get it done yet? Nice numbers with the hotcam btw. Are you running unported stock casting?

Heads aren't ported, they were milled though. How much I have no idea, the_Merv had built the thing.

OK so here are some pictures, it all makes sense now. I wish I had done this last night, I happen to have two LT1 short blocks hanging out in my tool shed, see I'm not crazy, there is no way in hell this sending unit could be installed!!! Its just as I described, there is no room. Checked the box, it is the right part number, maybe the wrong part in the box?

See? I'm not going crazy.

Hmm same part number came up on part websites?

I guess I need some part numbers thrown at me or something.

Autozone lists it as PS220 for both 93 and 94.

OK so Autozone's website does NOT list the PS220 number for 95-97?! Only the PS168 number with is the part number for the one behind the intake manifold!

Did GM change the block casting for three years or something retarded?!!! AAAAHHHH!

Any 95-97 owners have the sending unit down low or no?

This motor is a 95+ setup, don't know if there is a difference? This is ridiculous/interesting.
