Horrible LT1 Problem
#23
I love the sound of my LT, and have thought about keeping it, but I have also thought about switching to the dark side, I have thought about a texas speed 418 LS3 with cnc'd L92 heads and a real nice cam and intake, although I may just buy a real high mile 98-02 and do that build recipe as a street/strip combo, and keep my 95 a DD.

It seems to have oil pressure when he revved it a bit. If it isn't flooding itself with fuel I would say leaking headgaskets. It can probably be rebuilt, or a rebuilt LT1 can be dropped in. Either way it's $2000. The cost and hassle of putting in an LS1 would be too high.

thats exactly how it will run if its starving for fuel and only hitting one or 2 cyl .. been there done that....!!check your fuel pressure !! oil pressure looked/climbed ok when rpms spiked over 400+ like that time when u primed it a couple times and it spiked to 1000 rpm and oil gauge spiked to almost 20psi... you may just need a pump and filter replacement.. and condensation in the exhaust to a certain point is ok ..check fuel pressure 1st

X2 on the fuel pump, buy, borrow a fuel pressure gauge, mine did the same thing, idled just fine any amount of gas, would hesitate miss and stumble, bought a gauge and sure enough it was at 10lbs fuel pressure regulator unpluged, and that was the problem. It sounded really cool, like I had a huge cam in it.

here's the gauge i run on my rail... its a must in my opinion, nice to know what your fuel system is doing anytime you pop the hood with an issue and can rule out fuel pressure issues instantly.. u see it in the attached picture just aft of the fuel lines and strut braces shadow.

of-course you can go to a local parts house and buy a hand held tester for around $50

He did ask about ls1 ****. I said stay away and check your fuel pressure first. Mine did the same thing and it was my pump. I hope that's all it is for him too good luck

I agree with an LQ9 swap, much more affordable than LS1. Hell even a 5.3 would be awesome.
But I doubt the engine is completely shot. I've had issues with my car idling rough and not wanting to stay on too and it was all as simple as a vacuum hose disconnected. I'm

I'm not going to scream opti...but don't rule out ignition problems...it almost sounds like the car is dieseling, where the timing is so off that the car still runs, but for the most part misses and idles really low. I had the same thing that happened to you happen to me when my rotor exploded...the metal contact for the rotor was still there, just bent to hell, so the ignition system continued to fire...when i tried to start it the engine would crank, when i released the key it would then fire and start to diesel. It looks like this may not be your problem considering yours seems to fire while cranking and faster than mine did...but it's not something to rule out!

Not sure if it was mentioned, but there is a SES light. What codes are being thrown?
Oil pressure should not come into play with an engine barely running at 300rpm. IMO it's a timing issue, but throw a FP gauge on it and see if the pump is going south.
