Default How thin of head gasket can i go?

He guys looking at making up some compression and need some feedback from some of your tech guys. Its a forged 355 with a 0.007 deck height. Im milling my AFRs from 64 to 60cc with a 0.039 gasket it will put me at 10.7:1 and with a thinner 0.029 gasket would be 10.99:1. I know the clearances will be very close im just wondering what you guys think if this is a good idea or stick with the bigger gasket? Heads have a 2.055/1.6 valves if this makes a difference.

Thanks

have you checked PV clearance? What quench are you wanting to be at?

You can run a low as Mr. Gasket / Victor Reinz .026 gaskets which is what I have on my car...

You can run a .015" gasket if you really wanted to. .026" isn't the thinnest available.

Ill have to wait untill the heads are milled down to know for sure what the PV clearance will be. I just figured i would lay it out there to see if anyone would say its safe or better idea to stay with the bigger gasket. I know that the previous owner of the shortblock ran a set of stock heads with a .029 gasket at this deck height which maybe luck i dont know as there wasnt any marks on the pistons. But i know i have a touch more room having a little more material then stocker heads. Im not a big tech guy im still learning as i go and not sure what quench is or what quench i should be at?

http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/squishcalc1.html (motorcycle discussion, but conceptually identical)

http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...ide/index.html (more pictures, decent article relevant to GM wedge heads)

Should explain it for you- remember about room for a little carbon buildup. Rod stretch would be a real concern with an LS1, not nearly as much with the LT1.

what's your deck height? i still don't know how you're that tight... what's the relief on those srps, .100?

stroke, rod length, rod/piston material, wall clearance, rpm, etc. all come into play when you're pushing the limits on quench. I wouldn't run less than .035 on a 4" bore sbc unless you know what you're doing. I was at ~.032 and kissing, maybe it was just on a missed shift or something. But running it that tight didn't prevent me from detonating on pump gas and the resulting rebuild. I went .038 on this motor since i'll be revving to 8000, and I feel comfortable there. PTV shouldn't be an issue with 5cc reliefs unless you're running ALOT of camshaft.
