Default Oil pan gasket, 93 z28

How hard is it to replace the oil pan gasket on a 93 LT1? The motor is brand new and the damn seal is leaking oil pretty heavily right from the front of the seal where it makes a half circle (right above the k member), about a drip every second when the car is running.

Could I get away with smushing some silicone into the seal? Or what am I in for replacing it?

That sucks... Is the 1pc seal torn at the bottom from removing the timing cover? You could try lowering the front of the pan and using some RTV silicone. You say the motor is brand new, so Im assuming the seal is brand new too... you're supposed to use a little RTV on the front and rear of the seal (at rear main seal and timing cover). To remove the pan you will have to remove the motor mount bolts and jack up the motor, and if youre a 6speed you would also have to loosen the Kmember bolts to drop it down a few inches.

What he said? Plus it wouldn't hurt to drop the k member a few inches even with an auto. My alldata write up said something like 4.3 hours. I gotta do it too, suuuucks

lol damnit... Yeah all the seals are brand new, but the motor has been sitting for a year since being built with oil in it. It's a 383 stroker everything was replaced. Yeah it's only leaking from the front from what I can tell, I'm going to try and crack the pan and use some RTV where it's leaking.

What a PITA.

Why couldn't you just remove all of the bolts and let the pan drop an inch and slide the gasket over? I've never had to repair the oil pan gasket myself, but I would imagine this method would require maybe 2 hrs worth of time. No lifting, no removing motor mounts, etc.

Just a thought...

That's what I was going to try first with silicone

My mechanic buddy uses Permatex Right Stuff, which works really well, rather than RTV.

I don't see how you could just slide the gasket over, you would have to maneuver it down below and around the windage tray and oil pump/pickup. Seems like it would just be a mess and you'd get oil all over the gasket.

You're not picturing it right then...start at the front of the pan, slip the front of the gasket into place and slide the gasket over the bottom of the pan around it and up into place.

Ok yea lol that makes more sense. Sliding it around the outside of the pan seems like a good idea, as long as you keep it clean. Brain fart there
