Default Question About headers

I have hooker Long Tubes on my TA....

where the collectors bolt to the exhaust is bent on both sides and will not seal...

So I was thinking maybe I could cut the flanges an install and exhaust clamp would this have any problems sealing??

The only problem I see is that you would need a slip fit design with the y-pipe. I don't think the hooker y-pipe is designed that way. You would probably have to buy a different y-pipe or have yours modified to be slip fit, if they sell slip fit connectors. I use the Mr. Gasket Ultra seal gaskets and High Temp RTV and mine seals up fine but mine's not bent anywhere.

the pipes themselves aren't bent just the flanges where the bolt together....that clamp is a butt clamp designed for butting 2 pipes up that are the same diameter.... so if i cut the y pipe off straight and the header off straight they would just butt up then that clamp should seal them right?

Does that make better sense?

It may seal just fine then. I would have some exhaust mounting brakets welded near where the exhaust clamps together since it isn't a slip fit design. I see there being too much stress where it clamps together without brackets. You could try it that way first though and see how it works out.

If it is going to be a butt joint they will seal just fine. That is the way I have my y pipe to cat back connected. I used a butt clamp from napa great piece imo

ok I think that is what I will do..... Which ones are the V bands?

I don't think there will be much stress on it since the weld in cross member for my torque arm holds most of the weight.....

Yea my buddy SpeedDensity has flanges and they don't leak at all......I have tried everything and they will NOT seal...Got under there and really got to looking and you can see where they are warped (or hit something) and that is where they are leaking from....So my only real option is to cut both flanges off flush and clamp it or have new flanges welded on.. I don't have anywhere local to do that so i would have to put it on a trailer and take it to the shop etc....

Can you have the Y pipe open up wider by a half inch or so to slide over the header then put a clamp on it.

I used these clamps.

This how i have mine on the X pipe. Hasn't leaked had it for couple years.

Take it to an exhaust shop and have them fix it....no biggie...

I don't want to remove the Y pipe because it is a BITCH with my weld in cross member for my torque arm....

Do it like that. I had one leak and i just took some aluminum foil and folded it over and over in about a 1 inch rectangle and put that around the exhaust pipe followed by the clamp. Sealed everything up nicely.

That's a good idea. I wish I had read this while my car was on a lift today. Was doing my first clutch install and would have been so easy to seal up the leaky Y pipe to I pipe connection.

If it is 3" then you can use 2 of those clamps to have them mate up to the Y/X pipe. IF its slightly bigger, then you can probably slip the 3" pipe into the collector and use another style band clamp. If thats the case then i Highly suggest these
