Default Blew a Headgasket.... NEED OPINIONS

I recently Blew a head gasket on my LT1. I tore the motor down a little got the intake ready to come off (aside from the EGR pipe in the BACK of the damn intake), valve covers off, spark plugs out, all wiring unplugged, Brackets blocking head bolts off, etc..

Now i have to disconnect the headers from the y pipe and drop the headers a little bit, so i can get to the head bolts. Drivers side will be easy (Driver side is the one thats blown).

My question is, should i do both or just driver side... I want to do both but here's the problem...

I have till Saturday to get my inspection done.

My car is outside on 4"x4" blocks.

Its 20 degrees out.

Theres 2" of snow on the ground.

Really need help here.

Thanks in advance,

Kyle

Thats really your own personal decision man.

Obviously its ideal to do both headgaskets at the same time. Whenever I do head gaskets on a V motor I always do both. If one blew, the other is probably not far behind.

You have to weigh out how much work it is to get to the point of actually being able to remove the head vs. the time you want to spend doing it now. If you don't mind doing it all over again from the start, then you could probably just wait until Spring to do the other side.

if its your only transportation i say do one, but if you got something else to drive daily then wait about it and do both gaskets at once. cause if one blew the other prolly will too, also have the heads checked out by a machine shop

Do them both while you're in it. Check the heads for cracks too. It is common. It might take you an extra two hours to do the other side too if you haven't done it before, which still isn't bad.

If the engine overheated at any point, you need to have the heads checked for straightness. Not just one, but both. No way would I just replace one gasket. You're looking at an extra two hours to pull and install the other head. Not worth the risk of just doing one.

It is my only source of transportation.

Never overheated on me, Only got too 210 degrees at its highest point (I have a digital gauge and i was watching it like a hawk ) haha.

Yeah. I figured. I could do one, and my friend said he would replace the other for me in spring when its warm out for $300

Damn. I was hoping I'd get a few more laters than nows. any ideas on getting the headers apart from y pipe? There's some rust holding it on there? Heat it up maybe? Any suggestions?

Well, if you took the intake manifold off, you may as well go ahead and do both.

Inspection isn't the end of the world, if you are a few days late, you will live, unlike freezing to death trying to fix the car in the driveway.

Well if I don't get it inspected, I have to pay for insurance on both tags. I still have tags from the old car so its cheaper to transfer them over

I dont know why it blew.... I got the car, a little less than 2 weeks ago. It started saying "Low Coolant" on the dash, but i wasnt low on coolant, then white smoke started pouring out the tail pipes, every time i drove it/had it running, and it smelled really sweet. Then the motor wouldn't turn over, cause coolant got into my cylinder.
