Default LT1 cam gear

If an electric water pump is used on an LT1 and the water pump driveshaft/gear are removed, can a standard SBC cam gear without the teeth for driving the stock water pump be used?

The optispark is driven directly by the camshaft drive pin not the cam sprocket itself.

You can do that, but it has to be a timing gear for a factory roller camshaft. I prefer the GM single roller HD chain kit that the ZZ4 crate engines came with, I can get you a part number if you need it.

People have been doing this for years. If you have a 95+ optispark you can use a Cloyes made for TPI engines.

The hardest part is finding a plug for the timing cover. I gave up looking and siliconed a coin over it. It never leaked.

Ugh... How much did that mod cost you? I was thinking of having the hole in the next one I do welded up.

The chain I normally run is a 12371043, it comes with the crank and cam gears, and the single roller chain. I think it was about $50-60 from GM. This setup is the same components as the "Extreme Duty LT1/LT4" timing chain kit, but you can only use it with an elec water pump since the water pump drive is not included.

Don't use a CompCams double roller timing chain for a hydraulic roller cam. They suck.

Were I to do it over again, I'd use a Cloyes. More expensive, but less likely to have that happen. My poor LT1... Something with a solid center section.

I also used a quarter jbwelded in to the hole. Worked great.

I run this setup with a cloyes works great. Nothing tops the old school double-row timing chains nothing well for the price that is!! Sorry I don't have a part number. But I have a place you can order it from for like 50 bucks. Let me know and I'll get you the numbers.
