I'm guessing here, but that can happen when the MAF isn't functioning properly, or not all-someone correct me if I'm wrong...

ok, now that u mention it. the maf wasnt getting any voltage so i ran a hot wire to it from my electric fan relays. can you tell me where the maf power source needs to come from? that may be my problem, cause it still throws a dtc wen i first start the car. then it goes off soon after

If it turns out not to be your MAF, also check that the engine temp sensor is working correctly (the one in the water pump). This is the one the PCM uses to read temp. If it does not get up to temp, the PCM will not go into closed loop.

i believe if your 02's aren't plugged in you'll stay in open loop

my engine temp in the waterpump has been replaced in the last year but it could be bad again. do u know what temp the computer needs to see for closed loop? my car onl gets up to 165 or 170

How do you know you aren't going into closed loop?

I don't remember off hand but if the sensor is bad it will not read the actual temp correctly. I had one go bad (fairly new) and the pcm kept switching back and forth from open to closed.

Look at the temp readings in a datalog before replacing it. The temp reading should be relatively close to the gauge in the dash (mine is usually within 10* or less). While your looking at the log, check your 02s as well. Make sure they are fluctuating and not stuck on one value.

the o2s were fluctuating and the temp on the log was very close to what the guage was. so now im leaning towards the maf having a problem
