That is because a stock shortblock is actually higher quality than what many of the guys on a blind quest for displacement put together.
An aftermarket cast crank is a step backwards from stock, a chinese forged one probably needs machining to be as good as stock.
A $300 set of pistons is a step backwards.
The average bore job is a step backwards, a friend doing a high end gen 1 build found out the hard way just how good it is to get a genuinely good bore and hone.

People underestimate just how good the stock shortblock is and what it takes to genuinely improve on it.

Im pretty confident my 383 is better than my 355 or a stock short block and will make way more power across the board with the proper cam than either of the 2.
While I agree not every 383 is better than every 35x, but with the proper parts it most certainly is better.

my thoughts are..... why spend all that money on a shortblock when i can spend all that money on other parts of the car and go much faster?

Your times on your sig, is that running the stockblock? "stockblock" meaning un touched, the way the general made it? That's very admirable and impressive to say the least.

stock crank, stock rods, stock pistons with over 130k miles.... new oem spec rings, new oem spec bearings. because the general didnt send his LT1's out with 130k miles already on them.

the car went 6.40s in the 1/8 before i freshened it up. still had my home ported heads on it and a 230/236 cam. 135 shot.

Again, very impressive. I too, want to see the most I can get out of my stock bottom end combo this year. I'm going to run her harder since I finally have a new rear end.
