The norm is 3.73 gears for an A4 car, depends on your preference.
As you get higher, you experience:
Higher motor rev at cruising speed
worse gas mileage
less mph in each gear
lower top speed
Options include:
3.42's
3.73's
3.90's
4.10's
4.11's
Most people choose 3.73's, I went with 3.42's to conserve some gas, but still get a little bit of a performance gain. My car is primarily street driven, too.

with an a4 373's work well. with an m6 410's. but let me give you a little advice. if you plan on beating on the car at all..... GET A 12 BOLT OR 9 INCH. it will save you a lot of money and headaches down the road. i learned after blowing 3 stock 10 bolts. then i bought a moser 12 bolt.

Be aware of which carrier you have before ordering. I think they did away with the 2.73:1 GU2 option after 95, but don't quote me on that. Do you know what gears you have now? You can run your VIN here http://www.compnine.com/vid.php and find out which RPO your car came with. You can get 3.73s, etc for a 2 series carrier, you just have to order the right set. The ring gear is thicker/ wider on a 2 series, sometimes referred to as "thick gears."
Here's a table/ calculator for seeing where things change when you swap gears: http://www.f-body.org/gears/
