Default Removed my balancer/crank hub, got a ??

Hey guys,
I just removed my balancer and crank hub and I had a question.

Is the crank hub supposed to have a key way in it? I see a key way in the crank snout for the cam sproket but I dont see a key for the balancer. Is this just how LT1's are? Ive done numerous regular SBC's and diesels but this is as far as I have gone with an LT1 so I wasn't sure about this.

Thanks for the help

If you so desire to have a keyed hub though, Jegs sells a nice piece.

The LT1 is internally balanced so it really doesn't matter where the hub/balancer goes. Having said this, it's common to install the crank hub with the arrow pointing straight up with cylinder number one at top dead center.

Race engines, high RPM engines and crank driven blower engines should have their dampers keyed and secured to the crank with a key. As Corey said, they sell keyed hubs. Most if not all aftermarket LT1 balancers have keyways.

Got another question, if I get a keyed hub for the balancer, where can I get a key for it?

Just find out what size the woodruff key should be, you can purchase them from hardware stores.

I guess a few guys wanted it, it's sold! Thanks guys.

(Off topic: I had listed this in the for sale section long ago without a bite. This is why LT1 specific stuff for sale postings should be allowed in the regular LT1 forums.)

If you have LT1-specific stuff you want to sell, put it in your signature.

As already mentioned, there's no keyway in the OE hub. However, if you want to reinstall it in the same place it was, look inside the hub. It's quite possible that the hot oil has "tatooed" a dark spot which coincides with the key slot in the crank.

The multipack of woodruff keys at Advance Auto had one that worked, I think the whole thing of keys was under $2. I needed one for the 24x conversion.
