What year is your car? There are two different opti drives. One uses the timing gear pin to index to one of three holes the wrong two of which are hour glass shaped to try to stop you from getting it wrong but it has been forced in there, not 180degrees out, more like 120 but you have the right idea there.

The other one is a spline drive with one different spline. I only handled one of those and it was a PITA, with enough force I bet you could get that one misaligned too.

His is the spline drive,
Yes very possible, I recommend installing the opti, connecting wires correctly and starting the engine before installing everything else to make sure it fires up and runs right.. a couple of seconds running to make sure its installed properly will not hurt the motor with out coolant or pump or dampener.
IMO

That's where im at now I have spark fuel and fuel coming out the injectors and all it does it pop and back fire wont actually run. All plugs wires are correctly plugged in. So what you guys are saying is pull the opti and check the splines or turn it and put it back on.

This is good advice, I did this on Saturday BEFORE re-installing everything over the new opti.
