Here's the situation. I bent a couple pushrods on the passenger side of my engine. But before removing the rockers, I didnt set #1 piston to TDC. I now have all the rockers and pushrods removed and will be installing new hardened pushrods with guideplates and ultra pro mag rockers with studs.

Now, whats the best way to get the motor to TDC? Thanks!

 

arrow on crank hub pointing up, pull #1 plug to verify piston is up with something like a coathanger. fastest easiet way to do it with crap you have.

 

take #1 spark plug out and bump the starter till you here the wush of air coming out of the spark plug hole. then get yourself a socket that fits the crankshaft bolt and a ratchet, the longer the ratchet the better, and a small screwdriver. put the tip of the screwdriver into the spark plug hole and make it touch the top of the piston. then turn the engine with the ratchet till the piston gets as far up as it wil go. you shouldnt have to turn the engine very much at all. if the piston goes down when you turn it just turn the ratchet the other way

arrow method only works if the hub/balancer have never been taken off or only put back on exactly the way it came off

best to just watch the rockers and use the firing order for reference

 

He can't watch the rockers as they've already been removed. And that's why I said verify by going into the #1 cylinder spark plug hole. That's how I did it, tha'ts how america does it. And it seems to work pretty good so far.

 

you need to make sure you're on the compression stroke, not exhaust stroke

 

worst case you could probably look down in the hole and watch the lifter move up and down. you could also install the #1 cylinder with the new stuff and just watch. it may take a few times to adjust it. its not hard to fine TDC.. just trying to think outside the box.

 

Rotate engine until both lifters are close to even (on compression stroke), get a McDonalds straw and put into plug hole #1. Rotate until you feel the most resistance on the straw.

You'd seriously trust a keyless hub to be in the correct position?
