should i chang cams?
I broke the timing chain in my car and it bent couple valves. It also beat up couple pistons. So im gona to pull the motor back out and swap the pistons. Since i got the heads off im gona send em to LE and get him to do some light port work. Since im portin the heads. Do yall guys think i should go to a bigger cam. Its a 234/238 with 111 lsa now. The car is a 30% street and 70% track car now. I have 3.70 gears and 3800 stall. Thanks guys

FWIW, I'm running a 228 cam, 4200 converter, 4.88 gears (with 30" tires, so equivalent to about 4.10's with 26"), and at about 3800 lbs, and with the stock PCM I'm at the limit of utilizing the rpm potential of my cam. 60's are in the mid/high 1.4's and 1/8 mile in the 6.9's @ 97 at nearly 500 lbs more than you. I'm not saying that to brag, but to illustrate that you have a lot of potential in your present combo when you get the heads back on, everything properly set up and tuned.

I wasn't insulting the way the car runs; I just see the cam as already on the big side for a 355 with your gears and stall. As long as your present cam is a recent properly spec'd LE offering, and not a valvetrain-eating Bauer concoction, I guarantee if you get it tuned for the cam you have now, it will ET better than tuned with a bigger cam. I understand the out of box 21 deg heads are down slightly compared to the top of the line ported LE and AI stock castings, but trying to crutch that with a bigger cam will only compromise the low/midrange torque you need with your present setup. And even if you do go to more radical gears and converter, you'd need an aftermarket ECU to utilize the rpm potential of a bigger cam. If you want dyno numbers, have at it. If you want performance, stay conservative with the cam.

Do u think that gettin the heads opened up will pick up my low and mid range up? I wasnt takin it as u insulting my combo by no means. This is my 1st build and im open to all opinons and advise.

From my experience, porting a set of already good heads like yours won't add any more low or mid-range, but properly done it shouldn't hurt either. It will probably add a little more top-end power...or at least it should. I am not sure you will be able to take advantage of the extra power with your current gearing/convertor like mentioned above while NA, but it'll help when you are spraying. In other words, you may not pick up more than a tenth NA but then you might pick up 3 on the same shot as you run now.

i used to have a 355 with trick flow 23's on it and an AI 234/242 cam and the thing was an animal for what it was......11.2:1 3450lbs it would run consistant 11.40's at 120-122......for what its worth.........if u do the cam you WILL need the gear and converter to support it...them come hand in hand....
