According to the owner, it has a blown head gasket. Other than that, he says the interior is in great shape besides a cracked dash. It's fully loaded, leather, automatic transmission. The exterior looks to be in excellent condition. Rebuilt transmission.

I was wondering what you guys would pay for it as is and how much you think it would be worth if I change out all gaskets and seals, bearings, etc. In other words, rebuilt motor and tranny, no leaks, dependable car in stock form, running smooth, clean body and paint, and clean interior.

I would not pay over a grand for lawn furniture (which is what this car is since it needs engine work). If you fix it up, I could see it selling for his asking price, maybe a bit more if it is exceptionally clean and low-ish miles.

I think it has about 150k miles, but I could be wrong. For what it's worth, Blue Book says $4,300 in good condition.

$2,000 would be a good buy on it if you can do the work yourself.

I would not pay more than 2k for it. The motor is most likely gone and needs a rebuild. The bearings need replaced if it was run with a blown head gasket ; with 150k you might as well just rebuild the entire motor. Rebuilding the motor can be cheap if you do it your self; I am building mine for just under 2k with le1 heads, but can be really expensive if you have someone do all the work.

I was thinking of offering $2k, but I just wanted to get a few opinions on it. I wouldn't pay over $2k for it. I may start with $1,500, but I'm more concerned with how much it would be worth running good. $4,500?

I can get machine work for free when my uncle is not busy and he gets a nice discount at the engine parts, so the cost to rebuild would be very minimal. The biggest expense would be the time and effort. I was thinking of flipping it for a little extra cash or keep it and sell my camaro. I'm more of a camaro guy, but I don't have leather, t-tops, etc which I think makes a car much more valuable, at least in my eyes.

I would say you could get over 5k when it is done depending on the condition of the car; $1500 would be a really good deal.

I paid $4k for my Z28 with 100k miles in good running condition, I know trans ams typically sell for a bit more.

I wouldn't pay more than $1500 for it, and even that is a stretch unless I was buying it to keep it long term and not try to turn it over.

I would pay $4500 or less for a TA with 150k on it unless it was absolutely immaculate (show quality).

I paid $8500 for my '97 Z28 3 years ago. Not leather, but fully loaded otherwise. T-tops, 6-speed, etc. Not in perfect condition, but I'd say an 8 of 10. Had 71k miles on it.
Probably paid a bit much....but oh well. I still love it.

I wouldn't pay any more than $2k or so how that car is. Needs a full motor rebuild.

Thanks guys. Looks like we're all on the same page. I may go look at it and put some cash in his face and see if he'll take the bait. He may have already sold it for all I know. I called him the day it posted (one week ago), just to get details, not really interested, but it's been in the back of my mind for about a week. I know nobody in their right mind is going to give him $3k for it. I sure would hate to see it sit there and collect rust just because he's not reasonable on the price.

How much is a car with no rust worth to you (southern car)? How much do you think a half decent paint job would cost? ($1,500, and that would be about HALF decent) What about a nice set of leather seats? ($300-600). What about a working transmission? $300+. How about a COMPLETE LT1 core motor in good rebuildable condition? $300+. Wiring, PCM, accessories? $300+

Sure some would like to get it cheaper, and some of us have found killer deals for cars in similar shape for $1,000-1,500. That is not common though. You can't just go out and find one any time you want. Now proceed to tell me why that car isn't worth 2k all day long.

Well I just got home from looking at it and it's not much of an upgrade from what I have now cosmeticly. He has racing seats in front, but still has the original leather (I didn't get to see the original seats, but if he replaced them, they can't be too nice). The back seat had a tear on the top from sun bathing, so I assume the driver's seat would be worse. The head liner needs replacing (tearing around the t-tops and burn holes). Carpet wasn't terrible. Dash was horrible, center console was bad. Body was good, but definitely had some blemishes, all body lines matched up though. I would give the body and interior a 6 out of 10 and that's all I was interested in. I told him if he got desperate I would buy it for $1,000. We had different opinions of "good condition". He said the transmission was rebuilt for racing, but I had already lost interest by then so I didn't even ask about who built it. The tranny alone may be worth $1,000 but I wasn't looking for a tranny, I was looking for a nice body and interior.

I wouldn't give 1k for it. I've seen plenty of running lt1 cars for 1200-1500 on clist all the time.

^ True. It sucks to get your hopes up looking for something that you can save, and it ends up being too far gone. It's sad people let cars fall apart like that.

Don't know if you are looking for a project but theres a 98 ls1 a4 forsale in the Lafayette section. It has damage to the front passenger side. Could probably get it for around 2k, its under the radar because its in the auto parts section.

the car didnt fall apart, it just needs a damn head gasket. 150k isnt that bad and imo $3000 isnt that bad either. a blown head gasket does not mean the motor is junk and that it needs a rebuild!!

Dude, i was talking about the condition of the rest of the car. Supposedly the interior was good, turns out it was shot.
