Default Oil cooler, yes or no...

Wondering how many people deleted the oil cooler or added the oil cooler to their cars. Are there any real benefits from it, especially when running a lower temp thermostat.

Long story short I'm considering removing it simply to clean up the engine bay a little and reduce the overall number of coolant lines. It still has the original hoses which need to be replaced if I'm going to keep it.

Clean up the engine bay mostly and cant see any real world benefit of running one.

Most including me feel its junk and proceed to delete it. The vettes for the most part did not even have it and I believe they deleted it on later LT1 f-bodies. If I really wanted to cool the oil, I would use a air intercooler type which would be far more functional.

I once read that the f-body oil cooler is not so much of a cooler as it is a heater primarily. The coolant reaches operating temps much faster than the oil so in the interest of lesser emmisions, GM wanted to get the oil up to operating temps faster. So they used this piece in question to do that. Just what I read in many places. Kind of makes sense.

I deleted the stock cooler for a derale oil cooler with fan. In the summer time my oil temps would hit close to 260 without a cooler when driving it hard.

How do you measure oil temps?

From what I can see of the factory setup there simply isn’t enough surface area to actually cool the oil much at all. So, there goes another pound of dead weight as well as a bundle of tube routing that didn’t do anything at all.

Did you plumb a temp sender by drilling and tapping a hole into the pan?

Two options is to use caps on both the radiator and water pump, or the FACTORY option, which is to use the oil cooler bypass hose.
