Default Question about dropping a new motor in.

My car is a 1995 firebird lt1, full bolt on.

I've found some sbc 383s and 408s that I'm interested in dropping in.

My question is how would I run my distributor seeing as most of these engines have it on the back and I'm not sure If I would have clearance without cutting into the firewall (??) Also I could be wrong but doesn't the Ignition/distributor run off the lt1 camshaft?

I wouldn't do it it is difficult to do a tune up now... If I was going to do a swap I would either do a 383 lt1 swap or ls1 swap. Just my 2¢

So a standard sbc block would not work? I was planning on going with a carbed set up. I just don't wanna buy something and find out it won't work without a lot of modifications.

The big problem is there is no clearance for a cap and rotor... but with that being said if your going to run a carbed motor you may have a little more room but, I am not a 100% sure on that!

your most likely gonna have to cut out a peice of the cowel and possibly notch out the windshield for a distributor set up.

People do it all the time. They usually get away with just cutting a section of the cowl out. Take a look at the SBC section right below the LT1 section. Lots of swaps in there...

they had a few of these at rockfalls 1/4 one day i thinks bmr that makes a k member to do the swap. there wasnt much room behind the distributer but they fit. you do have to cut out a patch of the cowl but dont have to hit the windshield. besides the rear spacing they actually look pretty nice inside the engine bay, and it seems like the weight transfer is a little better. im doing this to my 94 right now actually. but im using a 440 mopar since i have way too many of them sitting around..... and the distributers in the front! the carb actually sits in about the same spot as the 350 carb does. motor plate and a fabbed up trans mount is the plan!

in my opinion id say do it if you can cut up the cowl, its a heck of alot cheaper to make the carbed motor run than it is the lt1. that may just be my love for old school non computer operated cars......sue me

Thanks I must of forgotten about that section.

It's just hard to find an lt1 that is built and stroked to my liking. Plenty of sbc around and I'm kinda hoping I could get a 408. BUT I'LL DO SOME READING! thanks guys anymore input anyone has to share would be much appreciated.

edit: well after reading in the sbc section to transplant to an f-body. That's a ton of work and I might just be better off finding an lt1 engine that is stroked

Seeing as cowl clearance is poor to begin with I highly doubt they are actually moving the engine rearward. It just looks that way because there is crap even closer to the cowl.

All the guys at the track are impressed with my car because not only does the computer let you have the performance but it lets you have the driveability and economy to go with it.

You don't find too many well-built LT1s because people don't do the research and spend the money in the right places.

i think the weight transfer thing just threw me because with the carb tucked under the cowl it looks like the motors moved a little

granted the lt1 can be really stout, it seems cheaper to make a carb motor run than it would to do a lt1 the right way.
