Default Ideas On car that will turn over but wont start.

I picked up a formula the other day.

Its getting fuel and has spark, when you turn it over it fires a little bit but wont star, and when you let off the key the engine actually turns over backwards (back fires a little).

Firing order looks correct, previous owner said he went through the valves (im going to redo this tmrw) and adjusted them.

looking for some ideas to try, or something else to look at.

If nothing comes up I think the next step is to pull the timing cover.

X2 on the rocker adjust- might be too tight. Find out what lifters are in it. If they're race style like Comp 875s, et al. they won't like more than 1/8 - 1/4 turn past ZL. 1/2 turn for LS7/ stock style

I was the one who set the rockers last before Austin bought the car from a friend of ours who is the previous owner. I set them at 1/4 turn past ZL. I am almost positive it has OEM/ls7 style lifters in it. It had set for quite a while so I am sure the oil had bled out of the lifters is my reasoning for only 1/4 turn.

To give a little more insight on the possible issue, the car itself had problems with running like crap(general random missfire/backfire) once it got warmed up. The previous owner did not do much troubleshooting with the issue besides put new plug wires on the drivers side and tried resetting the valves. The issue got worse so the car would run bad if it was cold or warm and then eventually would not start at all. It is not throwing any codes.

Some sort of timing issue is my guess. Doubly make sure all plug wires are in their correct locations. The screws on the rotor in the opti could be loose as well.

Unfortunatly it was the opti. First failure I've seen personally. Oh well at least its a easy fix.
