Default 94 Formula cutout problems

My friend has a 94 pontiac v8 formula. He just put on a cutout after the cats by the rear wheel. The car sounds nice... Although there is a tremendous amount of popping when he revs the car up or the car is bouncing off the rev limiter. When he gets on it I notice the car seems to be slipping around 40 50 mph. It sounds like hes revving his car and proceeding to take off. It's almost as if the trans is slipping but he got a new transmission a while ago and I never heard the car do that without his exhaust cutout. Maybe because it is louder we noticed this problem. I am thinking there may be too much back pressure? I don't know how that's possible with his cutout but hey I'm hearing popping. I actually just thought that his headder gasket could blow because of this extreme amount of back pressure. Am I wrong with this whole theory? Is it supposed to be like that? Could he be running too rich? Maybe he should unplug his battery to reset the cars computer? Would a tb bypass be a good idea to do to try to lean the car out? Any advice appreciated! The car is automatic and sorry for the million questions, I'm just trying to help out a friend.
