Default rev limiter ?'s

hey all , doing a cam swap and wondering what i should have my rev limiter set at. M6, stock shortblock, Crane 234/242 (same specs as GM847) 918 springs, magnum 1.6rr's, will have hardened pushrods, LS7 lifters. the cam recommends spinning 6400+, so what is a safe rev limit for my engine??

with it being the stock short block, i wouldn't take it over 6400. so maybe set the limiter at 6500. but that still might be a little high. personally i wouldn't go over 6300.

im sure you will spin a bearing before breaking a rod bolt, but either way a 2 bolt lt1 should not be reved part 6400 unless yu want to pull the motor.

5800 ...

As mentioned above, 6400 is generally accepted as a good balance between risk and benefit.
I kept my H/C 350's shift points just below 6400 and a limiter at 6800 without issue,
when I tore the motor down to build a 383 everything seemed to be in good shape.

If you're going to run that cam, you might consider saving up for a bottom end that can handle a little more RPM.
Maybe a nice 355 rebuild for next winter?

All this 6400 RPM stuff is nonsense. Can someone post an actual failure that was directly related to high rpms?

Rev it where it wants to be revved. No sense installing a cam like that and neutering it by not being willing to shift it high enough.

Get it on the track and play with the shifts points until you stop gaining trap speed.

Well i spun a lt1 i had for years at 6400 max rev on a 150 shot for over 2.5yrs with never having an issue at all. Stock cam, heads, intake, only had headers and CAI. I then repleced with le2 equivalnt heads and a cc306 and tuned it for the cam. when the swap was done and we raised the limiter to 6800 for the cam, well lets just say im not runing that motor anymore since she spun every rod bearing in the block. funny how i can spin her to 6400 for over 2 yrs with never any issues and then when she spins 400+ more she dies withing months.

Are the heads ported? if not that cam will likely stop making power around 5900-6000rpm

It doesn't "drop", it flat lined from 6 - 6200, when the pull was terminated.

With a stock cam? i would like to see the sheet with something showing the cam specs, the stock cam stops making power at 5600rpm so i would love to see one that still making power at 6000-6200
