Default Re-ring questions

I'm planning on freshing up my lt1 because a compression confirmed some blow by on 1 cylinder. Everything else looks fine so I'd rather put new rings, bearings, etc than a full rebuild. I've found a couple of kits at summit but was wandering if anyone has seen anyother kits that are better. The kit I found is this one:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEM-2056383M-000/

The engine will have ported heads and the 503 cam and the normal bolt ons. Thanks for any suggestions or help.

pistons and a lot more machine work. I don't want to bore the block until I have to or I really have the money to do a full build.

you don't have to get new pistons....many LT1's wont NEED any machine work for a rebuild.. just give the bores a good hone job. just make sure the cross-hatch is still good.

if you are not familiar with bottom end work id at least have a machine shop take a look at the bores........chances are if the motor is experiencing that much blow by right now its going to take more than just a "hone" to clean up the walls properly so the new rings seat.........espically if its a high milage motor.......

One of the "pluses" from computer control is cylinder wall wear. Engines with well over 100K miles have beautiful bores. This assumes the engine was running right. I'd mic them and be sure and if they are good a Flex-Hone is all you need to get the new rings to seat. http://www.enginehones.com/hone45.html

At the least install ARP bolts and have the rods resized.

Is this even worth doing with powdered metal rods?

this is what I hope is the case. I'm gonna have a machine shop check the block out and go from there.

Does the kit I found from Summit sound like a good price? $330 for all gaskets, rings, and bearings except cam bearings.

Thanks for the replies.

absolutly..........i ran the stock powdered metal rods with arp 2000 bolts and resized ends to 7000rpm making around 500-520fwhp for three years with no issues in a 355.......those rods will actually take quite a beating if done correctly......

trust me with that kind of mileage you are going to see cylinder wear........it will at least require a hone............have a machine shop or someone who has experience look at the block they should be able to make an educated guess of how much material has to be removed to clean the walls properly.......

A decent set of SCAT 4340 rods with cap screws are going for 250$ keep that in mind.

Use only the flex ball style hone if youre doing it yourself.

thanks I probably will use the arp bolts with the stock rods. Got my fingers crossed that the block will only need a hone.
