Default Fan Switch mod problems

I was having problems with the fans on my 1996 Formula A4 coming on so I decided to try this mod out. I got the fans to come on, one when the car is off and either one or two when the car is running. What I can't seem to do is keep the led lights on. I will flip the switch on and the lights will light up for a split second and shut off. I have tried it twice and both times I get the same outcome. Can anyone help me out here? I am using the cig lighter for both ground and power.

Do you have the correct diode in place?

Maybe you have your LEDs oriented backwards? Since they are diodes, they must be wired with the correct orientation to work.
