you have to buy a pro-jection drive saver before I'll tell you what's required to make it work

More like he has no earthly clue and has to actually work to look for the info.

I wish i would have known about this before i put my motor in. I just reused the stock one since it appeared to be in good condition. But knowing this now i will be ordering one for this fall when i put the car away for the winter.

You likely talked to the same guy I talked to and yes he was spewing lots of attitude. Dont remember his name.

I gave him my serial and part number and he said that the -9 indicator indicated on the card states it is billet and he insisted it had a billet gear.

I then asked if one can get a custom billet cam with a pressed on cast gear and he said yes.

I then asked would a custom billet cam with a pressed on cast gear also have a -9 indicator and he said yes.

Given the above, I then asked so how can you be certain I have a billet gear and he again insisted it was indeed billet.

I then stated, is there any other indicator on the cam card or serial that would indicate a pressed on cast gear on a billet cam and he said no.

I then stated that based on his information, there is no 100% conclusive way of determining what kind of gear was on my custom cam and he again said it was really billet.

I then ran an inspection scope down the hole where the drive stub goes and I believe I really do have the billet gear on the cam.

Just had a web chat with one of comps tech support. Gave them my model number off my cam and he said run the stock type oil drive gear. He said that is what the cam material was designed for.

"If you have an austempered ductile iron hydraulic or solid roller cam, your two options are:
1. Melonized or hardened steel distributor gear

2. Composite distributor gear"

Problem is people choose parts on price, and cost themselves more in the long run.

I think there is something going on with this situation, something is just not right I think there is something wrong with the cams or the gears. All the sudden everyone is having trouble when there was none before 96capricemgr are you saying that the comp cast cam is a poor choice? vs a billet cam. People have been using them for years without these issues now there are more and more popping up.

d-money is nuthugging Ai on the DL, yo.

There's NOTHING wrong with a cast core cam if you're keeping the spring pressures less than 450# or so.

I did not say anything about cast vs billet cams, I didn't say anything about any vendors.

I paid more for a cam with the Everwear gear on it in the first place, so I would not be chasing these troubles later.

This is a problem as old as time it's not new. It's not even specific to SBC's I have seen multiple times from chevy to ford to dodge to even older improts that have had this problem. They say one thing we do that and end up having to do another because it did not work lol.

Anyone that runs a used dizzy gear on a new cam is asking for trouble. I have done it myself and got away with it. Its like the old hydraulic flat tappet cams, you never run new lifters on a broke in cam or it will chew the lobes off the cam and screw the lifters up as well. A used dizzy gear with a lot of miles on in it, stuck on a new cam gear will more than likely ride in a different spot on the gear and cause it to wear out fast. JAGmelders cam is a cast cam, so we are going to put in a new GM oil pump drive with his new cam and should be set. I think a new GM drive would even work if the cam was billet, after all the factory LT1 cam is billet running on a cast drive gear form the factory. The dizzy gear should be looked at like anything else in a new motor and should be replaced. Its not worth chancing it.

Melders drive was in bad shape anyways due to the motor spinning a bearing and it had a lot of metal go threw it. We were getting a new gear either way.
