3.23 to 3.73

I've always seen that you want to be close to redline when crossing the traps...
So on a cam only LT1 setup 3.73s won't get you anywhere near that. Which is why I said that specifically. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As stated it really depends on what it's going to be used for. Any street/highway driving and anything above a 3.73 for an average run-of-the-mill-flavor-of-the-month cam is a little over the top in an auto car.

The 200rpm difference (@65mph) is hardly worth worrying about IMO.
Isn't there a huge thread where you are talking about mileage not being effected by gearing at all? So what's the difference for a DD? 200rpm volume isn't substantial in most cases.
Instead of the question mark smiley thing how about you "correct me if I'm wrong" ? I'm always down to learn.

The fuel mileage thread my point is gears/rpm is not what effects gas mileage as much as load on the engine. Many disagreed and went ape ****. Not even sure why you are bringing this up since this thread has nothing to do with fuel economy.

All I was doing was pointing out your contradiction. Don't get mad, broh. It's not just a "200rpm" difference. It's how the entire powerband behaves in a given situation. Besides, the difference in rpm grows at higher speeds and a lot of highways especially around you area at least 70mph. If a person in a cam only auto with 26" tires wants to race stop light to stop light then sure, 4.30's may be alright, but if that person wants roll race then the steeper gears will be a hindrance. As stated, it depends on the application and power peak, which I am guess is what you mean by "redline." Giving gear advice without knowing what the car is going to be used for is the incorrect way to go about things.

I've always been under the impression redline meant an engine speed that if crossed could result in engine damage. I've always thought shift points, power peak and redline to be completely different from one another. To each their own, I reckon.

Power peak redline and shift points are different when you use all three.
But I can see redline and shift points being the same... And that is how I see them. But I fully understand your version too.
So is redline your rev limiter?

3.73 is the perfect all around gear for a a4 period. If your looking for max effort track gear then yes a 4.10 is better long as you can hook it. Fwiw Redline means your at the point if you rev any higher engine damage is possible. You don't set your shift points at redline lmao.

It works both ways. You're way isn't the only way so don't act like it. I've heard it both ways for years. Yes your way is more correct too.

That's because they are all different and have their own definition. Perhaps in an old school mindset that holds true since there was no such thing as a rev limiter way back when and everyone thought the best results were to shift at redline... My power peak is 6800rpm. Shift points are 7100rpm. Rev limiter is 7500rpm. Redline is 7800rpm. If someone asks me "wharz redline" I think, along with about everyone else, they are asking what is the max engine speed can be ran before damage. I believe a stock LT1 engine is the same way set at the factory. Power peak is somewhere around 5700rpm. Rev limiter is 5800rpm and redline is 6000rpm IIRC.
