LT1 383 or LS1
In my head the 383 conf seems like it it would run faster but i've seen members sig where h/c/i cars are only running high 12's and i've seen full exhaust ls1 cars with a lid and dr's get that. from that standpoint the lsx sound better but would the setup i listed above not make comparable power?

Just to put an LS1 into an LT1 car will cost you anywhere from $1500-$2000. There are a lot of parts you will need.
k-member= $450 for tubular
headers=$450
accessories=$250ish ebay
pcm=$150
wiring harness=$150ish
torque converter=$600
Not sure if the LT1 radiator will work either. The inlet and outlet might be in the wrong spot.

what would i need .30 over piston and h-beams? also would this cam be better in a 355 with p&p heads

An lt1 t56 will work with little modding. Youll need an LS1 t56 input shaft, clutch kit, and bellhousing.

Well if we knew your budget that would be a huge help like everyone is saying unless the car is an LSX car all the parts to just switch it over is going to cost quite a bit before you even get to modding the LSX motor.
But Call LE/AI depending on your budget on your choice and like said before if you have a 12 second H/C/I LT1 there is something wrong in the set up getting it to the ground you have to check the Traps of them cars and see what kind of number it should be CLOSE to running

a pretty low budget, what i'm considering is a forged 355 with the cam talked about above or gm 847 and having my friend's dad who owns a machine shop port the stock heads and put larger valves in. could he use a le/ai gasket and port them that far? and also is a 96 block interchangeable with everything else 95?

But Call on of them companies to get a cam for sure tell them your goals and they will guide you in the right direction.

The LS1 swap will cost you a good bit to do as there is a lot of misc...check out my build thread and it will give you a good idea...
LT1 heads like everyone on here is going to say are real touchy there are water passages you don't want to port to far and hit and such but like I said both AI and LE were at one time "small companies" that no one has ever heard of thats where I don't like close minded people on there is only 2 porters in the world here and no other will do.
but if you can get your heads put together for free thats a HUGE chuck of cash saved there
but going to need supporting mods
-Headers
-Roller rockers
- Push rods
-Guide plates
-Clutch
-Rear end because yours has a high chance to blow up as soon as you put a sticky tire on it some people they live for some not you might get lucky
-Gaskets
-Fluids
-Cam
List goes on and on it gets expensive I have about 4k in my set up going in my car now and bought the motor built H/C/I so you can see where it adds up with all the supporting mods. I'd get all them first then go find a blown up LT1 some where and start over on the stand while you can enjoy your car while you build the one on the stand.

The guide doesnt have to be a 5.3, Im using a lq9 the guide is just to show you that its not as expensive as you would think and you can keep your 6 speed. The only difference in the lt1 and ls1 6speed is the input shaft is slightly longer, the clutch kit, and the bellhousing.
