Default timing set option?

got the local parts store to order me a timing chain set from cloyes part # c-3210. he said it was a single roller and fits a vin P engine. somethin seemed fishy so i looked up the part number and it looks like its for a ls1? should i cancel the order or am i just missing something? who makes a timing set for an lt1? comp is like $5xx and gm is almost $300 i think.. do we not have another option? also, is replacing the chain only an ok option or should the gears be changed to? just replacing while there off anyways.

I don't see any mods in your sig to indicate you need anything but stock parts. The GM parts at wholesale are not real expensive. If what they ordered is for an LS1, it obviously is not going to work.

he ordered the timing set for my motor but after i looked it up i was seeing gen III application so i was just confused as to why he had it listed for an lt1.

I wasn't really looking for any "better" than stock just cheaper than the $260 or so gm has it listed for. i've since found the part numbers for the individual parts and for some reason its alot cheaper than the set is. also i live in canada and prices are usually quite a bit higher up here.. thanks again shbox

Cloyes C-3039... for a good stock replacement single roller with factory water pump drive

If going to an EWP use Cloyes 9-3145

That part number I linked you is a good stock replacement.

Roller vs Non Roller chain is just that. The Roller chain will have rollers like a modern motorcycle chain. Less friction and ideally less wear.

For your application though the stock style replacement (non-roller) will do just fine.

I don't understand why Cloyes doesn't make a "true roller" HP replacement, for stock LT1s.....

That might work fine when you're fixing and flippin cars but when you don't want the valves to smack the pistons and **** **** up, you'll use somethin a little better.

If you actually do research you will find the original chain is very reliable. More folks actually have trouble when they overthink it in a BLIND bid to "improve" things.

Lots of folks claim doom and gloom when putting a fresh chain on the original gears again without any evidence to back up their claims.

is there a spec on the AMOUNT of timing play that is allowable on lt1's? my 70k original chain had a bunch of play (made a thread with vid a month or two ago), and i ended up buying a 1k mile comp replacement chain, and it didnt seem much better. im starting to wonder if its just the way it is.

They are loose stock, not a real problem, just a perceived one.

I agree, however back around '97, when I put a new "true roller" chain on my wife's 50,000 mile Caprice LTZ, the difference in the amount of slack between the two chains was quite noticible.

I replaced my stock 106K timing set with a NEW GM set from my dealer for about $100 and it still had quite a bit of slack also but, my original set had very noticable wear so im sure it helped it out though.
