Default transmission installation

just finished replacing my clutch and i am having lots of trouble getting my transmission back in. i can get it all lined up but cant get the studs on the transmission into the bellhousing to get contact. anyone have any tricks?

also what is the black line coming off the transmission on the passenger side? it leads to nowhere...
when i took the bolts out of the transmission one bolt was threaded through a clip holding the line steady onto the transmission. do i have to reinstall it like that?

thanks

The line is a vent tube. It is fine how it is, however it would be a good idea to bolt it up so it holds fast.

Not sure if I follow, but are you saying the dowel pins on the bellhousing won't got into the trans? If so, can you get a bolt started anywhere? I've often got it as close to the dowels as possible and started the two bolts on each side of the trans to draw the trans onto the bellhousing.

Make sure the trans is at the same angle as the motor for it to slide on. Its probably just getting jammed up a little.

Not sure if youre using a tranny jack or not, they help a ton with re-installation.

I bought a cheap $65 one from Harbor Freight. It's not the greatest tool I've ever used since almost everything that store sells is junk, but it still makes the job a whole lot easier.

It's a lot easier with two people. I did it with the help of my dad. We balanced it on a regular jack and rocked it side to side until everything lined up and just pushed in.
I messed up the clutch in my old vw by pulling the bellhousing tight with a bolt once. I advice against that.
