Default A DYI question from a newbie

Is there a certain special tool to change your plugs in a 4th gen F-body? Or do you have to drop the engine a bit? If there is a special tool where can I get it. Cause the garage down the street quoted me 700 for plugs and wires. Since they have to drop the engine. I appreciate the help

Wow i can't believe shops will down right steal from people. Sorry I can't answer your question more other than do not even pay near that price. To me I'd say there isn't a "special" tool. Just an extension, right size socket and a lot of time & swearing.

It's not necessarily stealing. It's basically buying their way out of doing the job. They are well aware of what a pain in the *** it is and don't want to do it unless the customer is dumb enough to drop the coin they ask for.

Yeah, go to another shop or get a WHOLE day you can spend on it if you've never done it.

different extensions, sockets.. its going to be a learning experience the first time.. once u find all the angles youll be able to do it faster. also get a wrench to fit the back of the spark plug socket, thats helped me tons of times as well

Thanx to all the helpful advice. And I figure I'd need to attack the wires from the bottom due to haveing big forarms.

I'll do it for $100. Might cost you $500 in gas to get here though

does your car have stock exhaust manifolds? if so it is a little harder. If you have headers its fairly easy.

Especially if you do it from under the car. On my car only #5 is a bear.

Al 95 Z28 W/long tube headers.

you dont need to drop the engine , you just need to go under it on one side , it isnt that hard just will take u some time the first time , each plug is in between the pipe of your exhaust manifold I to was quoted 500 and a 600 dollar job and I was like **** that so I took it to friends cuzin and he did it just for the price of the parts

once i learned that it made it awhole lot easier on myself, i got one of my plugs the first time i forget which one by pretty much do a swan dive on my engine.

but its not worth getting someone else to do it, yeah it takes like 4-5 hrs your first time, and alot of cuss words and bloody knuckles, but you save alot of money

Its worth it to spend $700 on headers and tune along with wires and plugs then have that shop do it!!!

With stock manifolds and Y-pipe its a Real PITA.. I didnt touch my plugs/wires until i installed my headers 7 months after owning the car

All 8 plugs are a 1/4" breeze except the #8the plug. 1&3 go in easily from the bottom. Rest just take a little "monkey fistings "cars to get the plugs in. Then just slip a socket over the plug and use a wrench in quarter turns.

I use this as well and it works great. The best tip i have for you is to start all the plugs in by hand. Never start them with a socket.
