Default Sometimes starter wont work...

Starting to notice recently you turn the key forward and the motor wont crank. I hear a loud click coming from under the car which I assume is the starter. It is very random, sometimes it works properly and others it takes several attempts. FWIW the battery connections are good.

Does the starter simply need to be replaced or can it be taken apart and the root problem addressed?

I had a similar problem on my old Jimmy. It would click a few times and then i'd wait awhile, and it would decide to just work. What was happening is that the starter shaft was dry and I also noticed the contacts were getting bad and it acted like it was sticking so I just replaced it and went on my way.

I used to rebuild starters but it's not really worth it anymore. Just get a new one.

Next time it acts up, smack it with a hammer and see what happens.

I had this issue a while back. I think the B+ threaded post on the solenoid was coming loose from the inside. I ended up just cranking down on the nut to tighten it back up until I finally had to replace the starter.
