I would BUT selling the car is completely not an option. This was my first car, i paid hard earned cash money for it, and i will give it to my first child. This is a car has a lot of sentimental value. The only real reason for the swap would be no opti and having a tuner. I live in ms and there is NO where that i have found that is capable of tuning lt1s. 24x conversion is the only reason lt1 is even an option.

the LS motors dont have the Opti problem and won't need a 1500 dollar kit to get rid of it Id just go with the 6.0 you have the motor already. plus you say stock heads but if you got all that stuff you can get for cheap why not get a good set of heads on that???

Go with the LS platform thats what I'll end up doing once I get bored with my LT1

Matts swap also is not on the same budget with ls3 headed, fast intake, and lq9.

if you have the 6.0 then do the 6.0, do the trans, ecu , k member, then build the bottom end or do heads and cam to the 6.0, or if u want to keep lt1 build the bottom end to 383 and put on good heads

matt did pick some nicer stuff, but it's not that cheap, I'm sure. you need a lot of stuff beyond lt1 to get that motor to fit. and if it's not a ls1 from a fbody, then you need the oilpan, intake, front accessories and all that will set you back some coin. plus you need a different tranny / wiring harness/ ecu/ headers, etc.

you'd have to be damn lucky with a junkyard motor first so you don't have a rebuild on your hands, and then you'd have to score all the extra parts for cheap and maybe you can squeeze it in under 6k but then you are betting on used parts to keep you going.

You should be nowhere near 6K, ill be around there with my turbo 5.3, but for a basic 6.0 with a cam/intake OP should be way under budget, my entire longblock is going to be around 2500 complete from intake to pan with accessories, injectors and exhaust manifolds. The turbo and all the misc stuff are another 2K or so, trans another grand. Thats 5500, add in the pcm, harness, k member and im right around 6K, Id expect OPs to be around half that

Motors more than likely just fine. Intake is 350 for complete ls6. ~300 for accessories he already has the harness and pcm. K member is 200 for a complete one. 150 for an oil pan. Any trans shop can convert the trans to ls style

6k would get you one nasty lt1, with a couple gm optis to spare if one went bad... whatever you do I think your on the right track about your car, keep it.

i've been buying/shopping parts for a year now, i can tell you that accessories are not that cheap and oil pans are a little more to have everything. ls6 intakes go for 350 for the intake alone.

not trying to pick a bone, but it is not as simple or as cheap as people think it is. that's my point.

OP good luck either way.

yeah i know lsx are easier to make hp....but my buddys are doing swaps and its never as cheap as the mag or people say....alot of little things are forgotten and thats what adds up....6g is alot of money for just to throw on an engine both lt1 and the 6.0 can make some nice power....but you have metioned your goals

what are your goals? single digit timeslips? dyno queen?

I ended up selling my 383 for a 6.0 setup. The LT1 was going to have AFR 210 Eliminators and a 24X conversion on it and be at 550-560 fwhp range. Now I've got an LQ4 that I picked up at a yard for $900 complete TB to oil pan. LS3 heads $700 brand new, f-body pan $120, 2000 f-body harness $300, K-member from a trade, 2010 Camaro LS3 intake, injectors, and rail $300, 96mm TB $200, LS7 lifters $122, LS2 rods/pistons $150, Cam and valve train kit $850. Selling the 317s -$150, intake and DBW TB -$100.

Total $3392

I didn't include the pcm, tuning, headers, oil pump, timing chain, bearings in there but you get the point. It was cheaper to build this motor than my forged AFR headed 383 to put out around the same power. But then again, it's a forged 383 vs a cast crank OEM rods/pistons 364.

The LS motor just looks so SWEET in our cars!!!

As far as the swap goes and which is better if I had to do it all over again I would still go LS based... I am not really bias as I like both LT and LS motors but I really like the support, interchangeability and ease of finding parts for the LS motors...and the power

My build has spiraled out of control (now with forged bottom end and a 76mm turbo) but there is a cheap way of doing it that I unfortunately didn't have the self control to do..

If you go with a stock LQ9 or LQ4 and throw a car intake on it and car accessories and stock swap parts with a cam you can meet your 6k budget fairly easy with money left for tuning...

like stated above where I got into a lot of money is
Fast LSXR 102mm intake, 1 7/8 headers, NW 102mm throttle body, EPS Custom cam kit, LS3 heads, Custom show harness, Tubular K member, Tubular suspension, Manual steering rack, Solid Motor Mounts, Electric Water Pump, Underdrive pulley, powder coating...etc buying a bottom end from a lying *******....

The thing is a 355 LT1 with AI heads and Cam are putting around 400 to the tires and you can do that with a TRULY budget LQ9/LQ4 6.0 with a good cam and bolt ons....

They are making around 600 to the flywheel with a set of bone stock LS3 heads and custom cam and bolt ons... pretty impressive

For me selling my Trans Am and buying a newer LS car was not an option as I am already in bed with my car and like the body style so the swap was the best option..

if you decide to do it please do one thing smarter than me and buy a stock LS harness and just send it the themerv and let him convert it if you don't wanna do it yourself...He is good at it...

just FWIW...My buddy had a Advanced Induction Heads Cam 383 LT1 6 speed car that trapped 121mph and mid 11s and a cam only LS1 car with bolt ons and cutouts ran with us on multiple highway pulls.... also a friend of mine just put down 415rwhp in his cam only 2000 SS car...

I'm in the process of the swap and if you search around for deals it can be done very cheap. Hell even instead of a LS1 K member you can buy a 40$ set of motor mount plates that set the drivetrain 3/4inch back and a LS will bolt right up. There really isn't anything hard about this swap at all. I preferred to do the LS k member so LS1 headers would bolt right up no issues. Not to mention better front brakes etc.

No question in my mind, do the 6.0 swap. If/when the day comes my LT1 experiences catastrophic failure, it will not be a LT1 car anymore. Only reason I haven't bailed, I can't let go of something that is working just fine. Maybe if my truck were finished and I didn't have to daily the Z28.....

Pretty much why I am doing my swap. I lunched my motor pretty good after the oil sending unit backed out and didn't notice oil pressure dropped cruising on the freeway doing 70 at night. Parted out my bolt ones etc and bought my '01 Z28 donor car. I bought my SS so I could turn my Z28 into a project car and couldn't really stand the thought of that much into a heads cam LT1 to be out run by a cam only LS..
