And even though my post was LT1-specific, a SBC follows the same plan.

lol i think if you read the thread i stated i do NOT want the lt1 anymore, I don't know where you got all of this from??. Never said anything about running 600hp in an lt1. Thats why i want to try and put a 400 block in there. I know ive reached my limit with my lt1 unless i want to wast thousands of dollars, not going to do that.

Well you have to start somewhere don't you? Geese some of you guys on here are a little too keyboard happy. How about a little encouraging information rather than a beat down just bc you may know something more than someone else? I'll tell you I've been apart of cummins forum for years now, and I do run a 600hp/1200lbs truck for the question "Do i know what 600 hp feels like?", and we are a little more forgiving there. Just saying no need for this kind of derail. Please state your opinion but can be in a respectful manner. Thank you.

Bro, if you want reliable power at that level its a no brainer, go LS.

You could do that N/A for your budget or close. You could also go forged LS and a small power adder and make that power all day long.

Hell you could do a stock 5.3 and 10-14 lbs depending on what size super / turbo and make that power stupid easy.

Why downgrade to older technology? For minimal gains and all that hassle? As other have said, you are going in the wrong direction; it's time to accept the fact the LS motor is the future of GM performance, swapping to a gen 1 motor is going backwards : Gen1<LT1<LS

Off-topic, but just curious if that block was any good.

And, I have to agree with the LSx prescription, as much as I love old school SBC. But if you do go ahead with the SBC 434 I want to see it when you get it done. Me personally for that kind of cash I'd do LSx with a wicked valvetrain and a supercharger and save the rest of the cash. Lots of fun any way you go...

I disagree. LTX<SBC<LSX

How many 600-700hp NA LT1s do you see running around dirt tracks every weekend. SBC's can easily make big NA power.

Lsx. It won't bolt in as cheap, but it'll make the power wanted for cheaper. Resulting in better mpg, less final cost and a terrible exhaust note.

The OP is getting away from the LT1 platform regardless....so still LS is the best motor for the job by your logic. It seems to me the LS swap is WAY more popular/cost effective/efficient than Gen 1 swap for a 4th gen cars...unless your building 4th gen dirt track car LOL (I thought it was illegal to swap in a pre-1988 motor in a newer car anyway? Which is why everybody either keeps the LT1 or goes LS) Somebody clarify this.

A 600hp SBC isnt to hard. There are thousands at the tracks around the country everyday. SBC is the most popular engine in the world and also has the largest aftermarket. I dunno if 10k is enough but it can be done. Dont worry about the haters just go for it.

Here's a good article comparing the costs of building a mild 400 vs LS (either carbed or fuel injected) granted, these are mild motors, but the point is the price difference is negligible when compared to power level...also the aftermarket is only getting bigger for LS motors.

Steve, these guys are right.

First, if you have an original SBC 400, advertise it and let it go to somebody restoring a Impala or Monte Carlo that needs a period correct block.

For high performance use, the Chevy 400 is too fragile and has some quarks to it.

You'd be better off getting an aftermarket small block package that's like the Shafroff 434 mentioned above. You'll have to come up with a solution to squeezing it under the cowl.

Better yet, go with the LS option. You can do a carburetor on an LS, there are stand alone ignition controllers on the market for retaining the coil pack ignition.
