I have 111k miles on my 97 SS with a genuine 2OTL SLP muffler, and it looks NOTHING like that. I couldn't tell you if it has been exposed to salt, though. As far as I know, it spent it's first 60k miles in California, then the rest in IL, VA, and now NC.

That's pretty messed up. I'd replace it with a Magnaflow/etc. equivalent, or the SLP one for a truck. Getting that fixed might be more hassle than it's worth. I can't imagine a Magnaflow sounding that much different since it's basically the same construction.
As for the stainless thing, those are made out of 409 stainless IIRC, and after 15 years and if it was exposed to road salt, it's not uncommon for a factory muffler to start rusting out. I dunno how that thing got split apart so bad, but the rust on the seams and the overall finish of the muffler isn't terribly surprising from what I've seen on my own vehicles.

just make a new one out of a 3" bullet muffler, make the 3" outlet merg into 2 for the tail pipes should sound similar
so far my slp muffler has stood the test of time. perhaps the original ones from the late 80's early 90's were a little better
