Copper Braided ground wire??

What does that brittle copper wire actually ground? Im replacing it, but just wondering what it does. It goes from the coil stud to the frame.

It is a way to additionally ground the engine to the frame in an effort to keep the ground potentials the same.

thats all it does. get some grounding straps from summit and add them from your shock tower to where your alternator is and where your coil is. thats what i did but i like overkill

I just bought a BBC ground strap from summit for less than $10 and put it right where the coil is.

It is ALWAYS good to have a bigger ground strap. Helps to eliminate many electrical gremlins. I have a 1" wide strap that goes from the cylinder head to the OEM location with star washers to bite into the metal on the frame rail.
